Klosterlivet har en lång historia. De första klostren kom till i Egyptens öknar under 300-talet som en samling eremithydor, så småningom skyddade av en hög mur mot rövare och banditer. Så ser de ut än idag även om hyddorna byggts om till huskomplex kring kyrkor. I Rumänien av idag består ett större kloster av ett muromgärdat centrum med främst administrationsbyggnader kring en kyrka och omgivet av klosterbyar, somliga mindre och mer avskilda för ett kontemplativt liv på avstånd från huvudklostret samt av ensliga eremit-boningar i total avskildhet.
I den romersk-katolska kyrkans Europa kan man hitta stora klosterkomplex med ett liv som formats av motreformationens ideal med sträng avskildhet och strikta regler, mer progressiva skapelser i moderna hus som tagit kvinnors annorlunda roll i samhället på allvar och socialt och aktivt arbetande kongregationer vars medlemmar har sitt arbete till största delen i eller utanför institutionen eller lägenheten, vidare sådana nya skapelser som Jesu Små Systrar som kan ha ett tält som kloster eller bo på vinden i ett raserat renässanspalats i Marseilles slumkvarter.
Vi hittade denna nedlagda skola när vi sökte ett större hus på landet och fann att både läge och hus passade våra syften. En magasinslänga är ombyggd till gästhus, det finns en liten eremithydda för systrar i retreat och två mer provisoriska bostäder för folk som vi inte har rum för på annat sätt. Samt ett hönshus, ett litet växthus och en vedbod! Samt en församlingskyrka på andra sidan kyrkogårdsmuren med högmässa nästan varje söndag.
